GLP-1 Medications and Hair Loss

Understanding, Supporting, and Caring for Your Hair

Hey friend...

First, let's clear the (h)air. The House is a judgment-free zone full of support- so you do you boo. Second, we always encourage speaking to your doctor when you notice a rapid or increased shedding of the hair to rule out any other medical issues. Now that out of the way...

If you’ve started a GLP-1 medication and noticed more hair in your brush or shower drain, you are not alone. Hair loss can feel scary, but please know—it’s usually temporary, and there are ways to support your hair and your confidence along the way.

But like....

Why does hair loss happen?

When it comes to rapid hair loss, multiple triggers range from diet to stress. Going back to COVID, many people experienced hair loss. However, this was not a symptom of COVID but a common response when the body experiences stress or trauma called telogen effluvium. A stress response characterized by an increased number of hairs entering the “resting” phase, which then shed a few months later. This condition can be triggered by:

  • Rapid Weight Loss – Significant or quick changes in weight put stress on the body.

  • Nutrition Gaps – Lower appetite may mean you aren’t getting enough protein, iron, or key vitamins and minerals.

  • Hormonal Imbalances – Shifts in insulin, thyroid, and dips in estrogen.

  • Medication changes: Medication ater 8-12 weeks out use can trigger a telogen effluvium phase.

The good news...

Telogen effluvium does not cause permanent damage to hair follicles. With time, care, and support, hair growth almost always returns.

5 Tips That Truly Support Hair Health

  1. Prioritize Protein – Hair is made of protein. Make sure your meals include high-quality sources like eggs, lean meats, beans, or fish.

  2. Check Your Nutrients – Work with your doctor to monitor levels of iron, vitamin D, zinc, and B vitamins. Correcting deficiencies can make a big difference.

  3. Stay Hydrated & Balanced – Water supports scalp and follicle health. Pair hydration with balanced meals to fuel your body and your hair.

  4. Seek Professional Support – A stylist can suggest cuts, color techniques, or styling alternatives to help camouflage thinning and boost your confidence while regrowth happens. There is always something we can help with!!

  5. PRP Treatments: PRP is a concentrated solution of platelets, which are blood cells that contain growth factors. When injected into the scalp, these growth factors may stimulate hair follicles and promote hair growth. This is a medical procedue that we have seen results vary on many of our clients.

5 Common “Fad Fixes” That Don’t Work

  1. Mega-Dosing Biotin – Unless you’re deficient, extra biotin won’t speed up hair growth. Not now, not ever....

  2. Detox Shampoos Or Avoiding Doing your hair – Detox shampoos may clean your scalp, but they don’t address hair shedding at the root cause. The other side is that avoiding washing, blow drying, and "tugging" on your hair will make no impact. Hair in telogen effluvium will shed regardless of your efforts.

  3. Collagen Gummies – While good for skin and joints, research on collagen’s direct effect on hair is still limited and not a cure all.

  4. Miracle Oils & Serums – Hydrating the scalp is fine, but no topical potion can prevent systemic hair loss. Minoxidil, a common over-the-counter medication, will not help, as it is designed to help with hereditary hair loss. So save your $$$
